Last Post of 2012

So here is my last post of 2012. Its funny looking back and seeing all the illustrations I've done and where my style ended up recently. I definitely wasn't always on time but I completed over 53 illustrations so I will let it slide a little. All in All it was a great motivator for me to keep doing my personal artwork! Lately I've been missing doing hands on paintings so I think I might leave 2013 open to whatever artwork I feel like! Anyway Happy New Year and thanks for following along!

These two guys are total besties. This illustration is one in a series of nine I'm doing for a certain friend's nursery! I hope they will like them!

the Abominable Snowman is totally misunderstood.

That poor guy up there in the freezing cold with only snow and mountains. I bet he's really, really nice and is just cold and lonely. He probably doesn't even get wi-fi. Well I bet if he did he'd want to wish each and everyone of you a happy holiday season!

Custom Nursery Print

Here is a custom nursery print I did for my lovely friend Tracy. She wanted me to do a custom illustration for a Christmas present for her niece and nephews. Here is a train themed one for her nephew Gavin. Fun!

Yea, yea, so I know I did a cloud illustration last week, but I had to get this one out of my system once I had the idea, so here ya go, more clouds and rainbows! Hopefully next week I get off my weather kick.

This one is a little more graphic then my normal style, but I feel like I'm in an exploratory phase right now, trying out different techniques. I really like my hand lettering on this one. I might have to make an alphabet out of it.

Cloudy day

So its very rainy and cloudy here in Kansas City.  A day where the more coffee you can drink the better! So I decided to embrace the cloudiness and do this print. Although these clouds are way happier then the ones outside.

I went through a couple rounds of hand lettering with this so included some black and whites of what those looked like. I'm trying to expand different styles of lettering but definitely need to work on that some more.  Hope everyone has a great day.

Tea Party Time

Growing up I don't ever remember having a princess tea party... more likely I was outside playing baseball or trying to climb a tree. But hey, maybe its time I try to embrace my inner girly girl a little more... so here ya go, its my tea party print!

So I've been trying to do some different styles lately and this week's I decided to focus on doing some surface design. I tried to keep everything very loose and free. It was fun to do, I wish I could get a bedspread made in this pattern.

Happy Halloween!

So halloween is my favorite Holiday of the year (by far)... what's not to love: costumes, theatrics, chocolate, the color orange, need I say more.  I have 3 different costumes for this year, (top that). So in honor of the most magical time of year here is my skullrific halloween print, I like it so much I might change the saying to: "Bad to the Bone" so it can be a year round print.

Let your spirit fly

So this week's illustration is actually a painting. I've been doing so much of my illustrations digitally I've been missing the messiness of paint! So it felt great to get back to doing my hands-on work. The only problem is when you make a mistake you can't use command Z (undo). This is done on a wood board with acrylic paint is around 18 x 24.

So my favorite thing to do is laugh, and I laugh loud, I mean really loud.. loud enough people sometimes stop on the street and stare at me... but that doesn't stop me, nope, I laugh so hard I snort. Yup, that's me... so this week's illustration is all about a reminder to myself to keep up the good work :)

Instant sunshine

I originally did this hand lettering for a work project I was doing and didn't end up using it but really liked the simplicity of it so decided to use it for this week's illustration, I just whipped up a grey skies pattern threw in a little sun and there you have it. I think this would look super cute in a kids nursery!

So if anyone knows me, they know I'm a bit hooked on astrology... So I decided its high time I do an astrology series with my illustration. I decided to start with the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries. I am married to an Aries, my best friend is an aries and so is my mother. I feel like I'm magnet for them. Good thing my sign (Sagittarius)  is quite compatible with them.

My favorite thing about Aries, is their uncanny drive to be the first in EVERYTHING... Whether its being first in wining games, or having the newest technology before anybody else, they will win! So this print is based on the part of their personality.

Find your Courage

Let go

This week's illustration is all about trying to let go of things upon which you have no control, and if you are able to surrender and let go, you begin to free yourself.

My Sister's Cat

So my sister has one of the prettiest cats I've ever met, but with all that beauty comes a price to pay because she is also of the scariest cats I've ever met, too. Whenever I stay over she tries to claim her territory like she's a lioness in the african plains and i'm a baby gazelle trying to walk by her through the hallway. I meekly yell for my sister to come and rescue me so I can get into the bathroom because that 11 pounds of fury is no match for me.

Well anyway her beauty still mesmerizes me after all of our fights so i decided to doodle her for this week's illustration, and I added a photo of the little diva. Don't let those innocent eyes fool you here, they are the eyes of a 400 pound lion waiting to pounce on you and tear you from limb to limb.

Vegetarians Do It Better

I have been a vegetarian for over fourteen years now and am still surprised at the crazy comments people make to me when I tell them.

Below is a list of my favorites comments and my passive-aggressive response I silently make in my head...

1. But you eat chicken right?  - (No you idiot, chicken is meat)

2. But you do know that plants scream when they are pulled out of the ground?
(Seriously... where did you go to middle school science at? let me guess somewhere in Arkansas?)

3. How do you get ANY protein?
(Um tofu, beans, quinoa, nuts, - you can find it EVERYWHERE - especially if you know how to read)

4. Yea but um, do you still eat animal crackers?
(I would but I hear them talking to me in small little voices, so it makes it difficult.)

5. What do you eat, like salads?*
(What do you eat, like corn dogs?*)
*Please insert condescending voice

6. How do you participate in thanksgiving?
(well considering 90% of a thanksgiving meal is vegetarian side dishes, its really not too difficult, but what is difficult is people pointing out over and over again how they could NEVER give up turkey on thankgiving...)

and my ALL TIME FAVORITE was my mother-in-law's comment to my husband when he became vegetarian, which was:

7. "But I didn't raise you that way!?"
(like being a vegetarian is comparable to raising a son that is drug dealer, murderer or terrorist)

So in response to this here is this week's illustrations.... thanks for reading my little rant!

Art Unleashed

Follow Me on Pinterest

So this weekend I've been working on some new illustrations for Kansas City's annual Art Unleashed event.  Art Unleashed is a great event where artists donate artwork with animal themes for a silent auction that benefits the Humane Society. Last year was my first year and it was so much fun! There was a TON of awesome artwork and it was fun to sneak around and see people bid on my artwork.

This week's illustration is inspired by Illustration Friday's word of the week "Carry". This is just a fun quick little piece I doodled up. Have a monsteriffic week.

Bird Doodles

Follow Me on Pinterest

This week's illustration is some more of these wacky birds I can't stop doodling.  I also am including my inspiration for the color palette of this piece. I saw this photo of this awesome chair on pinterest and was inspired by the colors/patterns and wanted to incorporate it somehow into my bird illustration.  So voilà here it is.

Eventually one of my goals is to do illustrate all of the astrology signs.  So since I was lucky enough to be born under the charming sign of Sagittarius ( the adventurer, wanderer and seeker of truth)  I decided to start with my own first. A good Sag will look at each day as a new adventure and hopefully this print will inspire to remember that... especially on monday mornings.

*WARNING* shiny objects can be distracting

This week's illustrations is for the blog that inspired this blog, Illustration Friday! I.F. is a great site where and they post a new topic each week to illustrate and then participants post their images on the site and they pick a winner. Super great way to build the illustrator community.

This week's topic was the word 'shiny' and who doesn't like shiny things? I know I do. I played around with the idea of shiny objects and the saying 'brand new and shiny' but nothing stuck until this little saying came up and I decided it was close enough to shiny to count.

This gal is letting herself shine from the inside out, see how she's meditating really, really hard on it. Plus she is rocking some super cute curls. I have also been really getting into hand lettering all my latest illustrations and am having fun with it. I think the lettering on this piece integrates nicely with the gal.

Thanks for stopping by!

So Rob my husband is an avid homebrewer and has been asking me to a homebrew print for him for a while now. So in honor of his big homebrew fest that is coming up this Saturday I finally did one. I am really happy how it turned out and according to Rob, "I totally need to put more dudes in my illustrations" so I did. Dudes and beer go together very well I think. I also included a photo that my muse (Rob) took of his beer he drank to help inspire me.

Put a bird on it

So if you haven't already watched this hilarious clip "Put a Bird on It" from Portlandia, you must watch immediately! Watch here

So I totally put three birds on it for this week's illustration. I also threw in a three eyed monster, because hey why not.

Tonight is First Fridays in the crossroads too so if you are in the Kansas City area stop on by - I'll be selling my prints and paintings at Archival Designsfrom 6-10 tonight.

Black Cats were hipsters before hipsters were cool

Follow Me on Pinterest

Here is this week's illustration, based on my own black cat  - Miika - He's a big guy who's around 13 or 14, he enjoys sitting in my lap WHENEVER POSSIBLE and is an all around pretty friendly guy.  Miika and I were talking and we would like to put the old superstition of black cats being unlucky to rest, they are very lucky and also totally hipster before hipsters were cool...

Also did you know that black animals have a hard time getting adopted from animal shelters - TOTALLY NOT COOL. We have two black dogs and one black cat and let me tell you, they blow any multi colored pet away. Anyway here's an article about it if you are interested: click here
